Greetings, Peace & Love
Paying it Forward... I had an interesting revelation recently when I had an opportunity to offer what I thought was a very small gesture of goodwill to some of my colleagues. I had been blessed with some spontaneous good fortune and instinctually offered to “pay it forward”. It was just a little gift – scholarships to a class for those who couldn’t afford it. I didn’t think it was a big deal, didn’t want any attention over it and was baffled when it spawned such a reaction from others who thought it was a huge and generous gesture. I got emails from a dozen colleagues and even one from the president of the company. All over a few donations of $75 scholarships! The lesson for me was two-fold. First, I heard the mantra “keep giving”. Even in small doses, the meaning often outweighs the gift. Philanthropy is a meaningful part of what makes us human. And because we are all in different places, we can choose our giving paths at each moment. Some people have lots of money and no time. Others have little money and plenty of time. Some souls, like me, ebb and flow between the two. The goal is to seek out giving opportunities, whether time, money, words, gestures... and take advantage of them – both for the good of your own soul and for those we touch. Second, giving is contagious. I didn’t realize it when I publicly offered the scholarships, that the benefit to the group was more than the offer. It was the articulation of the giving spirit – a personification of that vague sense of doing the right thing. People like that. I believe they instinctually need that. Because we are all capable, possibly hungering, to make a difference in the world, this little gesture was not just for this one cause, but it supported the culture of philanthropy. It was one of those examples where the giving had more meaning than the gift. So, keep it up, step it up, seek it out and find your own nuggets to call your legacy. Our simple, sometimes small collective actions will eventually change the world as we know it.
